Must be located in IL (or on the borders). Frequent travel to participating rural ACO sites across the entire State is required. Must be well-versed in MSSP ACO requirements and an enthusiastic supporter of improving patient health through growing population health programs.

The ACO Medical Director (part-time/fractional) will be responsible for working with IRCCO leaders and ACO participants to engage ACO physician champions and participating providers in initiatives focused on improving quality of care, decreasing unnecessary utilization, and managing healthcare costs for IRCCO’s ACO’s at-risk populations.

The ACO Medical Director will report directly to the ACO Executive Director, with cross reporting to the ACO CMO. Some Board of Managers attendance will be required, as will some industry conference travel (in-State and out-of-State).

The ACO Medical Director will participate actively in most ACO initiatives to ensure effective communication between IRCCO and provider participants that improve efficiency in care delivery, patient engagement, provider alignment and coordination of care.

Related activities include identifying opportunities for performance improvement, setting collaborative goals, monitoring outcomes, and sharing best practices. They will also provide input into payer conversations regarding quality measures and targets and ongoing payer meetings regarding performance management strategies.

Expected time commitment: 20 - 40 hours per month estimated (capped at 550 hours/year)

Provide in-person and virtual ad hoc and quarterly MD meetings to ACO participating clinics
Attend bi-monthly quality workgroup meetings (virtual)
Attend board meetings (virtually, when requested) and the Executive Director-led all-ACO quarterly performance review meetings (virtually).
Attend payer contracting/service recovery calls (as available/needed), provide ad-hoc phone/email support to IRCCO MDs, and provide planning assistance to Executive Director via monthly touch-base calls.
Illinois travel expected (we have locations all across the entire State), but will also include at least one national event with Executive Director/Board Chairs (NAACOS, ACO vendor event, etc) in 2026+.
Most materials needed for meetings will be compiled by IRCCO staff. Edits will only be needed by MD. Exception is quarterly all-MD calls where main content will be developed by this position.

Essential Duties:

Engage and motivate ACO providers and practices to achieve meaningful quality improvements and reduce avoidable health care utilization.
Responsible for supporting the development and sustainment of clinical initiatives and impacting clinical strategies and workflows that promote practice and patient satisfaction and improve value-based healthcare delivery.
Partners with ACO leaders to establish and evolve performance measurement and reporting for ACO value-based contracts and other Clinical Integration programs aimed at improving quality, the experience of care, and lowering cost of care.
Partners with ACO and IRCCO leadership to identify priority clinical focus areas and supports the creation, implementation and provider engagement in action plans to improve ACO contract performance.
Serves as the clinical and provider voice in the creation of educational and training materials for ACO participating providers on critical value-based care and population health topics.
Serves as a thought leader on population health management and the integrated health model, with an eye towards system-wide value enhancements through the institution of best practices and technological solutions or other enhancements.
Participate in ACO board meetings and other committee meetings, as needed. May serve as Chair or other leadership roles for certain clinical committees of the ACO.
Works closely with ACO leadership and teams to develop intervention plans and review KPIs.
Participates in the all-ACO quarterly performance reviews, and other important communications, when ACO Medical Director input is needed.

Education and experience:

A Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
Board Eligible or Board Certified in a medical specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialists.
Current medical licensure issued by the State Board of Medicine or the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine where the MD practices.

· Preferred: experience providing care in rural communities.

A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program. NOTE: this position does NOT require direct patient care.
Experience in ACO, Value-Based Care and/or Managed Care required.
Excellent physician relations skills. Skills in relationship development and collaboration across a matrix environment to establish standardization of care and coordinated plans medical case review and program development.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Power Point, desired
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to communicate effectively with a large and diverse constituency, in verbal, written, and presentation formats. Ability to work with a high degree of independence in a dynamic environment.
Strong analytic and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions

Typical remote office setting, with frequent in-person meetings at one of our member hospitals in IL.
Attendance at professional events (two to three times per year)
Ability to sit and work at a computer for an extended period using repetitive motion
Ability to prepare complex data and figures, complete extensive research on value-based care program requirements, and then share that information clearly with non-technical audiences
Ability to work regular Central Time Zone business hours, in addition to extended hours as needed to comply with CMS deadlines and/or extenuating circumstances

Requirements

Must be able to travel as necessary. Position requires a current unrestricted driver’s license, the ability to rent a car (if needed), and must not be sanctioned by any medical authority.
